Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativity church of Upaix, originally named Notre-Dame-de-Bellevue, is a Catholic religious building located in the Hautes-Alpes, on the commune of Upaix. Built outside the old enclosure of the village, it is built on a slope with a single nave of 23 meters long by 7,50 meters wide. The building, rebuilt in the seventeenth century, was listed as historical monuments in 1947 and restored in 2001.

From the 14th century remain a narrower square choir, vaulted in broken cradle, as well as the base of the bell tower. Inside, there are side chapels, a large polychrome and gold wooden altarpiece in the choir, bearing the coat of arms of Caritat de Condorcet, Bishop of Gap from 1741 to 1754. A painting of 1637, depicting the prayer of Andrew and James of Amat, also adorns the church. Many interior objects are listed in the Palissy base of the Ministry of Culture.

The church, owned by the commune, is an example of religious architecture mixing medieval elements and later additions. Its inscription as a historic monument in 1947 underlines its heritage importance in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
