Church and its adjoining cemetery (Box B 1459): inscription by order of 30 September 1992

Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativity of Unjat is located in the hamlet of Unjat, in the commune of La Bastide-de-Sérou, in the department of Ariège. Isolated at the top of a hill east of the village, it is accessible by RD 211 and adjoins a cemetery and a golf course. Its exterior architecture, robust and disparate, is marked by imposing foothills and a two-storey bell tower, pierced with three bays. The entrance, protected by a modern shelter, is accompanied by a statue of the Virgin on pedestal.

The present building, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, replaces a primitive Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Vincent, whose exact location corresponds to the present site. Inside, the choir, illuminated by a large carved oculus, houses murals made in the first half of the seventeenth century, representing angel heads and plant motifs (rins). These decorative elements testify to the artistic evolutions of the period, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance influences.

The church and its adjacent cemetery were listed as historic monuments by order of 30 September 1992, recognizing their heritage value. The property belongs to the commune of La Bastide-de-Sérou. Five objects from the liturgical furniture are listed in the Palissy base, highlighting the richness of the preserved movable heritage. The site, although little documented about its past uses, remains a place of memory and worship for the local community.

The geographical location, noted as "passable" (precision 5/10) in the Merimée base, places the church at the approximate address 78 Unjat, 09240 La Bastide-de-Sérou. Its isolation and its positioning in height suggest a historical role as a visual landmark or assembly place for the hamlet and its surroundings, typical of the rural mountain churches in Occitanie.
