Church (Doc. 1959 B 261): Order of 8 June 1979
Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativity church of Lescherolles is a religious building built in the 13th century. Located in the Seine-et-Marne department, it is representative of the medieval sacred architecture of the Île-de-France region. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 8 June 1979 bears witness to its heritage value and its importance for the local heritage.
The location of the church, at 45 Rue Notre-Dame in Lescherolles, is documented in the Mérimée base, with a geographical precision deemed satisfactory a priori. The building belongs to the commune and its protected element, the church itself, is referenced under cadastre 1959 B 261. Although the available sources do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, etc.), its status as communal property suggests a central role in local life.
In the 13th century, when it was built, parish churches such as Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativity served as a place of worship, community gathering and identity marker for villages. In Île-de-France, then under Capetian influence, these buildings reflected both the Christian faith and the feudal organization, while playing a social and economic role for the inhabitants. Their architecture, often sober, met the spiritual and practical needs of rural populations.
