Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix de Rieux, located in the commune of Lillers (Pas-de-Calais), is a religious monument built in the 12th century. This building, typical of the medieval architecture of the region, bears witness to the importance of Christianity in the social and spiritual organization of rural communities in northern France at that time. Its classification as Historic Monument in 1875 underscores its heritage value and its role in local history.
In the 12th century, parish churches such as Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix served as places of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants. In Hauts-de-France, a region marked by strong agricultural activity and growing trade, these buildings played a central role in everyday life. They symbolized both the collective faith and the power of local lords or religious institutions.
Their preservation until today offers an overview of construction techniques and artistic traditions of the medieval era.
