Notre-Dame-de-la-Tour parish church (Box K 415): by order of 11 October 1990
Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Tour, also known as the Church of Saint-Sauveur, is a religious building located in Sault, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its construction began in the 4th quarter of the 12th century, in a characteristic Romanesque style, with a main nave of three vaulted bays in a broken cradle, supported by columns with capitals carved of foliage. This monument illustrates the medieval Provencal religious architecture, marked by ornamental sobriety and structural robustness.
Over the centuries, the church underwent several reshuffle campaigns, notably in the 14th, 17th and 19th centuries, reflecting liturgical developments and the needs of the parish community. These changes may concern decorative additions, structural reinforcements or adaptations to religious practices of each era. Despite these transformations, the building retains original Romanesque elements, witnesses to its medieval foundation.
The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Tour is classified as historical monuments by order of October 11, 1990, recognizing its exceptional heritage value. This classification protects the integrity of the building, including its protected elements such as nave and capitals, and underlines its importance in local and regional history. Today, the church remains an active place of worship and symbol of Sault's architectural heritage.
The location of the building, in the heart of the village of Sault, reinforces its roots in community life. Its approximate address, 6158 F Rue de la Claustre, and its Insee code (84123) confirm its membership of the commune of Vaucluse, in the arrondissement of Avignon. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), based on available data.
Owned by Sault, Notre-Dame-de-la-Tour Church embodies both a spiritual heritage and a historical landmark for residents and visitors. Its ranking among the historical monuments of the Vaucluse makes it a remarkable site of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, attracting lovers of Romanesque architecture and medieval history.
