Origin and history

Notre-Dame de Magescq Church, located in the Landes department in New Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Its apse, its bedside in average limestone apparatus and its carved capitals testify to this Romanesque period. The church was first mentioned in 1206, confirming its seniority in the local landscape.

In the 14th century, the building underwent major changes, including the elevation of the bedside and the addition of defensive elements such as archères, defence chambers and a round road under the roofs. These changes reflect the tensions of the time, marked by religious conflicts and protection needs. The bell tower, covered with an imperial roof and surmounted by a frame arrow, is also built during this period.

The church was damaged in 1569 by Protestant troops in Montgomery during the Wars of Religion, a violent episode that marked its history. Repairs and transformations continued in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the re-perceived bays of the nave and the modification of the vaults of the choir. In 1843-1844 a sacristy was added, and the gallery was rebuilt in 1933.

Ranked a historic monument in 1969, Notre-Dame de Magescq church retains remarkable architectural elements, such as its semi-circular apse, carved modillons and sundial engraved in the south wall. The restorations after its protection preserved its religious and defensive character, typical of the medieval buildings of the region.

Today, the church remains an important witness to local history, mixing religious, architectural and military heritage. Its massive bell tower, its 18th century classical porch and its interior decorations, like the carved feasts, make it an emblematic monument of the Landes.
