Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Marmande, located in the Lot-et-Garonne department in New Aquitaine, finds its origins in the 14th century, with a nave built between the end of the 13th and beginning of the 15th century. Originally linked to a Benedictine priory founded in the 12th century and dependent on the Abbey of Clairac, the church suffered major destruction in 1672 (clocher, choir and part of the nave), followed by a reconstruction from 1673 by the Bordeaux architect Julien Foucre, known as Hope. The cloister, of which the south gallery dated 1540 remains, as well as lateral chapels, testify to the work carried out in the sixteenth century. The building, classified as a historic monument in 1862, also benefited from ad hoc restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries, including an aborted project by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in 1847.

The organ, masterpiece of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll installed in 1859, dominates the nave from a neo-Gothic platform. Ranked as an object in 1977, it was maintained by Maurice Puget (1927-1936) and restored by Jean Daldosso in 1998, adding an independent pedal. The stained glass windows, made between 1859 and 1945 by master glassmakers such as Émile Thibaud, Lucien-Leopold Lobin or Joseph Villiet, illustrate biblical scenes (Life of the Virgin, of Christ, Saints Peter and John the Baptist). The cloister's garden, classified as a remarkable garden, completes this heritage complex that is always open to the public as a parish church and cultural space.

The choir's murals, added in the 19th century, disappeared between 1962 and 1968, while recent restorations preserve this emblematic monument of Aquitaine religious heritage. Its history reflects the architectural and artistic evolutions of the region, from medieval origins to modern beautifications, to post-collapse Baroque reconstructions. The site, owned by the commune, now combines cult, tourism and plant heritage with its cloister garden.

Historical sources, such as Georges Tholin's studies (1874) or the archives of the Merimée base, underline his central role in Marmande's urban history. The early classification in 1862 and the recognition of the garden as remarkable anchor the church in national heritage networks, while at the same time testifying to its local anchoring for nearly seven centuries.
