Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Montfort-le-Gesnois, located in the village of Montfort-le-Rotrou (comune of Montfort-le-Gesnois, Sarthe), replaces a medieval building threatened with ruin. Its construction, launched on 1 March 1856, is part of the 19th-century neo-Gothic movement. The plans were signed by architect Tessier, and the works, financed almost entirely by the Marquis Aymard de Nicolaÿ, then mayor and local chestnut, were completed in 1858. The church was consecrated on 28 September 1858 as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, reflecting the influence of the Marian dogmas of the time.

The building is distinguished by its 75-metre bell tower, overlooking the Huisne Valley, and its facade decorated with statues representing the Blessed Aymard of Cluny (the patron saint of the Marquis) and Saint Adelaide (the patron saint of the Marquise), as well as the four Evangelists around the bell tower. Inside, the stained glass windows, some of which date from the late 19th century, illustrate holy figures such as St Augustine or the Virgin Mary, while an oil on canvas depicts the translation of the relics of St Theodora. The tympanum, carved by Cottereau, presents a bas-relief of the Immaculate Conception, the central theme of the decoration.

Ranked a historical monument in 2007, the church bears witness to the aristocratic patronage of the Second Empire and the influence of the neo-Gothic style in Sarthe. Its painted decoration, especially in the choir, and its furniture elements (glass windows, statues, retables) make it a remarkable example of the religious heritage of the Pays de la Loire. The parish still depends on the diocese of Le Mans, perpetuating its spiritual and cultural role in the region.

The exact address, 7 Place de l'Église in Montfort-le-Gesnois (72450), and its inscription in the general inventory (Mérimée base) confirm its anchoring in the Sarthois territory. The Marquis de Nicolaÿ, as sponsor and mayor, embodies the link between local power and heritage, while architect Tessier illustrates regional know-how in religious architecture in the 19th century.
