Clocher (Case C 368) : inscription by order of 7 December 1925
Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Moustéru, located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany, presents an architecture marked by two distinct periods. The bell tower and western façade, dating from the 16th century, illustrate the Renaissance style, while the nave, rebuilt in the 18th century, adopts more classical forms. The southern facade is distinguished by a window accompanied by an outside bentier, a place where, according to local tradition, lepers attended the offices from outside the building. This detail reflects the social and religious practices of the time, where exclusion of infectious patients was common.
The partial reconstruction of the 18th century incorporated elements of the old Renaissance church, including two reused doors. The curved windows, surmounted by rustic gables, and the square pillars of the nave, oriented at 45° relative to the axis of the building, are notable architectural features. These pillars support two rows of voussoirs in the middle of the hanger, decorated with pronounced mouldings, bearing a neat craftsmanship. The whole, although reworked, retains stylistic consistency between the epochs.
The church bell tower was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 7 December 1925, recognizing its heritage value. The location of the building, on the Presbyterian Square in Mousteru, makes it a central point of the municipality, both geographically and symbolically. Available sources, including Monumentum, highlight its importance in the local religious and historical landscape, although the accuracy of its location is considered poor (level 5/10).
