Origin and history

Plancoët's Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth Church is a Catholic building built by the Dominicans to replace a chapel built in 1644 or 1664. The nave and choir date from the seventeenth century, while major works at the end of the nineteenth century extended the nave by 5 meters and redone the facade. The building follows a basilical plane, with a central ship and two collaterals, and is distinguished by its blue granite facade, its classical doors with ionic columns, and its bays in the middle. The glassmaster, located on the north facade, lights the altar laterally, a provision linked to the classed baldaquin that surmounts it. A fire in the right collateral would house the lead coffin of the Baroness of the Hunaudaye, transported in 1647 even before the construction of the church.

The adjacent convent, facing southwest, communicates with the church via the bell tower. It has a square floor and an additional attic, with traces of an old outdoor courtyard and a monumental fireplace still visible. The stained glass windows, made by the workshop Megnen, Clamens, Bordereau d'Angers at the end of the 19th century, complete this architectural ensemble. The church is listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage, demonstrating its historical and religious importance.

The dedication to Our Lady of Nazareth is inspired by the Marian tradition, celebrating Mary, the mother of Jesus, whose faith and dedication are commemorated in this building. The initial chapel of 1644/1664, replaced by the present church, reflects the local anchoring of the Dominicans and their role in the spiritual life of Plancoet, Brittany.
