Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié de Saignon, located outside the village, is a religious building emblematic of Provencal Romanesque architecture. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it is distinguished by its 16th century porch, adorned with a three-door portal and a large Gothic arch with arches in the middle of the corner or trilobed. These architectural elements reflect medieval stylistic evolutions, mixing Romanesque sobriety and late Gothic ornaments.

The church pyramid bell tower dominates a triple nave, while the abside, covered with lauzes, testifies to local construction techniques. Inside, the baptismal fonts, dug in a Carolingian altar stone, recall the ancient liturgical vocation of the place. A stone engraved with a Celto-Greek inscription, now extinct, as well as a bubble from the Council of the Apt of 1365, underlined its historical and religious importance in the region.

Ranked a historic monument in 1909, the church also houses an 11th century marble bentier, also protected. Its location outside the village walls suggests a central role in medieval community life, probably linked to religious processions or gatherings. The site, marked by a human occupation since Antiquity, is part of a territory rich in Gallo-Roman and medieval remains, as evidenced by the excavations of the nearby Saint-Eusèbe Abbey.

The village of Saignon, perched on a rocky spur, was a strategic place from the 10th century, with the construction of a castrum and then three castles in the Middle Ages. These fortifications, now extinct, were controlled by noble families such as the Simianes or the bishops of Apt, whose conflicts marked local history. The church, as a major religious building, was undoubtedly an issue in these power struggles, especially during the confrontation between Bertrand-Rambaud of Simiane and Bishop Guillaume Centullion in the 13th century.

The region, integrated into the county of Provence, has had a turbulent history, from the barbaric invasions of the third century to the wars of religion of the sixteenth century. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, by its longevity, embodies this historical continuity, serving as a spiritual and community landmark throughout the centuries. Its architecture, preserved despite the vicissitudes, offers a tangible testimony of Provencal Romanesque art and its adaptation to the liturgical and social needs of successive periods.

Today, the church remains an active place of worship, while attracting visitors for its architectural heritage and picturesque setting. Its ranking among historical monuments and its location in the Luberon Regional Natural Park make it a must to understand the religious and medieval history of Provence. The presence of ancient and medieval remains in the surrounding area, such as the Saint-Eusèbe Abbey or the Saignon Rock, further enriches its heritage interest.
