Church: registration by decree of 22 December 1954

Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Prey is a religious building located in the municipality of Prey, in the department of Eure, Normandy. Built mainly between the 15th and 18th centuries, it reflects the architectural and cultural evolutions of these periods, marked by transitions between late Gothic, Renaissance and classical additions. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 December 1954 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation for future generations.

Rural churches like Notre-Dame de Prey played a central role in the life of Norman communities in the 15th–15th century. In places of worship, they also served as social and cultural landmarks, hosting gatherings, religious festivals and collective decisions. Their architecture, often modest but symbolic, reflected local resources and craftsmanship, while embodying the faith and identity of the villages.

The protection of these buildings in the 20th century, like that of Prey, was in response to a desire to safeguard this heritage in the face of modern transformations.
