Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame de Tonnerre is a Catholic religious building located in the city of Tonnerre, in the department of Yonne, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Sens-Auxerre and was classified as a historical monument on May 20, 1946. Its architecture and furniture, including a shawl containing relics of St. Thierry and a statuette of St.Eloi of the 15th century, testify to its historical and spiritual importance.

Among the notable elements of his furniture is a commemorative picture of the epidemic of 1632, representing Charles-Henri of Clermont, Count of Tonnerre, interceding with Saint Roch. This picture illustrates a tragic episode of local history, where the plague struck the region. The church also preserves relics from Saint-Michel de Tonnerre Abbey, strengthening its link with local religious heritage.

The building, owned by the commune, is located Place Charles de Gaulle in Tonnerre. Its classification in 1946 underlines its heritage value, both for its architecture and for the works it houses. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as an emblematic monument of the region.
