Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Vervins, located between the Church Square and the Rue de la Liberté, is a Gothic building with fortified influences, built mainly in the 12th, 16th and 19th centuries. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1975, it illustrates the architectural transitions and successive reconstructions related to conflicts, especially after the fire of 1552 by the Spaniards. Its brick bell tower, ribbed vaults and monumental paintings make it a rare testimony of religious art in Thierache.

The first church, mentioned in 1135, was rebuilt around 1200 before being destroyed in 1552 during the Spanish siege. As early as 1553, restoration and expansion work was undertaken, including the elevation of the porch hatch (1566) and the addition of a sacristy in the seventeenth century. In the 18th century, renovations (carpent in 1789, pavement in 1723) modernized the building, while in the 19th century, architect Pierre Bénard enlarged the choir (1870–72) and installed stained glass windows signed Champigneulle (1880).

The interior houses monumental paintings restored in 1871 by Rigon-Maillet, as well as a romantic organ of 1885, offered by local benefactors and housed in a 17th century buffet. The designated cemetery, disused in 1789, became the place of the Church, while the old adjacent Old Castle, destroyed in the 20th century, gave way to a school. The church, formerly parish-density, now belongs to the parish of Sainte-Anne in Thierache.

Its architecture mixes limestone (chœur), sandstone (nef) and brick (clocher), with complex vaults and roofs in pavilion or polygonal rump. The painted decorations of the pillars (1566–90) and the neo-medieval wall paintings (1879–90) reflect the influences of Viollet-le-Duc. Successive masters, such as Prévot (baroque portail, 1700) or Bénard (neo-gothic portail, 1876), marked his stylistic evolution.

The organ, restored in 1989, and the thirty stained glass windows, including some from Champigneulle, highlight its artistic heritage. The bell, the capitals carved by Buisine and the frescoes of Amass complete this ensemble. A communal property, the church remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Vervins' resilience, between warrior destruction and architectural renaissances.
