Origin and history
The Prioral Church of Our Lady of Vizille, located in the heart of the Vizille cemetery in Isère, dates from the late 10th or early 12th century. It was the parish church of the city until the 18th century and belonged to the monastery of Sainte-Marie-de-Visiliae, dependent on Cluny Abbey. This monument illustrates the architectural influences of the south, especially through its Romanesque portal.
The portal, decorated with a marble tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four evangelists, is one of the most remarkable elements. The lintel, on the other hand, is carved with a representation of the Supper. The church, now at risk, also preserves remains of walls and classified capitals, two of which are exhibited at the Musée de la Révolution française de Vizille.
Ranked a historic monument on several occasions (the chapel door in 1906, remains and parcel in 1996), the church dominates the city and the surrounding valleys. Its present state reflects both its historical importance and the challenges of its preservation. The capitals, protected in 1911 and 1914, bear witness to the artistic richness of the site.
The building, owned by the commune, is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in Isère, mixing molasses and marble in its construction. Its location in the centre of the cemetery highlights its central role in the religious and community life of Vizille since the Middle Ages.
