Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Immaculée-Conception, also known as the Church of Notre-Dame, is a Catholic building located in Petit-Bourg-des-Herbies, in the municipality of Herbiers, in the department of Vendée. Founded in the Middle Ages by the monks of Saint-Michel-en-l-Herm, it was originally a Lombard style. The present building mainly preserves the central nave, the old bell tower and a span, the other parts having been destroyed during the Vendée wars.
The bell tower, the only protected element, was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 26 December 1927. It is a major architectural vestige of local religious history. The church now belongs to the parish of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul-des-Herbies, in the diocese of Luçon, and remains an active place of worship, linked to a neighbouring private school bearing the same Marian patronage.
The church is also associated with the former commune of Petit-Bourg-des-Herbies, now integrated with the Herbiers. Its history reflects medieval parish dynamics and the upheavals associated with the vendean conflicts. Departmental archives and local heritage resources, such as Mérimée, document its architectural evolution and its role in the community.
