Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-des-Mines d'Aubin, located in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie region, was built in the middle of the 20th century to replace a wooden chapel dating from 1879, dedicated to miners of the Banel mine. This project, initiated in 1942, is part of a post-Second World War context marked by the reconstruction and modernization of local infrastructure. The building, built in cement armed according to the plans of architects André Salvan and André Boyer, embodies a contemporary architecture adapted to the spiritual and social needs of a changing working-class community.
The church was embellished between 1951 and 1967 by major artistic works: the frescoes by Gabriel Genieis, which establish a parallel between the life of minors and the Passion of Christ, and the stained glass windows created by the monks of En Calcat. These artistic elements underline the profound link between the Christian faith and the daily lives of mine workers. The building, inscribed in the historical monuments in 2001 and labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage", thus bears witness to the industrial and religious history of Aveyron.
The protection of the church as a historic monument since April 30, 2001 recognizes its exceptional heritage value, both architectural, artistic and memorial. Owned by the diocesan association, it remains an active place of worship while attracting visitors for its unique heritage. Its exact address, 15 Rue des Bleuets in Aubin, and its Insee code (12013) firmly anchor this monument in the Rouergat territory, between worker memory and religious tradition.
