Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-des-Miracles church of Avignonet-Lauragais is a Gothic-style religious building built in the 14th century, more precisely from 1385. It is distinguished by its octagonal bell tower, flanked by an elegant tower of stairs and crowned with a Gothic arrow with hooks. This bell tower, built on a square plane at the base, turns into an octagon on the upper floors, with blind arcades and columns at the corners. The interior houses a 1631 painting commemorating the massacre of the inquisitors in 1242 at the Château d'Avignonet, now extinct.
The church has been listed as historic monuments since 18 November 1926. It preserves several remarkable classified elements, including a 16th century bronze bell, a 17th or 18th century painting depicting the Martyr of Avignonet, and a pontifical manuscript of 1538. The high altar, the altarpiece and the tabernacle, of Regency style (18th century), as well as objects related to Notre-Dame du Rosaire, testify to its rich artistic and religious heritage.
The monument is located in Lauragais, a historical region of the Haute-Garonne, marked by religious conflicts in the Middle Ages. Its name, Notre-Dame-des-Miracles, and its history linked to the Inquisition make it an emblematic place of local memory. The spiral staircase turret and the steep bays of octagonal floors illustrate southern Gothic architecture, adapted to the constructive traditions of the time.
