Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-des-Sources de Fontaines, located in the commune of Doix-lès-Fontaines (Vendée), is a religious building built in the 12th century. This monument, emblematic of the local heritage, is distinguished by its western facade, classified as Historic Monuments by decree of 23 July 1952. Its architecture reflects the stylistic features of the Romanesque era, although the precise details of its foundation and evolution remain partially documented.
Fountains, a former integrated commune since 2016 in Doix-lès-Fontaines, is part of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, a wetland marked by a rural and artisanal history. The territory, passing through Gallo-Roman periods as evidenced by local archaeological discoveries (ceramics sigulated near the Genats), saw its church become a central point of community life. The religious buildings of that time served as places of worship, assembly, and sometimes refuge for local people.
The area, now known for its marsh and natural heritage, was in medieval times a space of small seigneuries and agricultural activities. The church, like many similar monuments, played a major social and spiritual role, rhythmizing the lives of the inhabitants between religious festivals, markets and local events. Its classification in 1952 underlines its heritage importance, although the available sources do not detail major historical events specific to this place.
Dr Albert Rouger (1870-1969), a local figure renowned for his medical work, including a serum against asthma and rheumatism, is one of the few personalities associated with Fontaines. However, no direct link between this character and the church is mentioned in the sources consulted. The monument remains above all a testimony of the architectural and cultural heritage of the Vendée and the Poitevin Marais.
