Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil church of Wattrelos, located in the northern department, was built in 1909 to meet the spiritual needs of workers coming from the countryside to the expanding industrial areas. In a sober neo-Gothic style, it was distinguished by its brick structure and its bell tower with an arrow of slates, typical of the local religious constructions of the period.
At the end of the 20th century, the church suffered from structural problems and a lack of resources for its restoration. Faced with the decline in attendance and the financial constraints of the diocese of Lille, it was disacralized and then closed. After a decade of abandonment, its demolition was decided in 2012 to give way to housing. Some elements, such as the Marie-Angélique bell and a stained glass window, were preserved and entrusted to local cultural and parish centres.
The complete demolition took place in January 2012, marking the end of an emblematic place of worship in the Beaulieu district. His legacy continues through saved objects, such as the bell exposed to the Saint-Marcel centre and the stained glass built into the Saint-Pierre parish centre. These remains testify to his past role in Wattrelos' community and religious life.
