Origin and history

Notre-Dame du Bourg-Dun Church is a Catholic building located in the commune of Bourg-Dun in the Seine-Maritime region of Normandy. Built from the second half of the 11th century on the site of an ancient abbey, it illustrates medieval religious architecture with works dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Its materials, tuf and sandstone, as well as its carved baptismal fonts, bear witness to its Romanesque heritage.

At the beginning of the 16th century, a chapel was added to the building, marked by a vault made by Nicolas Bediou. A altarpiece completes the ensemble in 1680, reflecting the stylistic evolutions of the modern era. The church was recognized very early for its heritage value: it was classified as early as 1862 on the first list of historical monuments and then protected by decree in 1910.

The building, owned by the commune, preserves remarkable elements such as its baptismal fonts and its 17th century altarpiece. Its early classification underlines its importance in the Norman heritage, between medieval heritage and enrichments of later periods. Historical sources, including the work of Ferdinand Coutan (1894), document its architectural evolution and its role in local life.
