Origin and history

Notre-Dame-du-Breuil Church is a Catholic church built between 1959 and 1962 in Albi, Tarn department. Designed by architects Georges Mas and Gérard Sacquin, it met the needs of parishioners in the new districts of Breuil and Mazicou. Its reinforced concrete architecture, with alternating concave and convex plans, evokes the fortified mass of the Cathedral of St. Cécile of Albi, from which it is inspired directly. The stained glass windows, made in 1960 by Raymond Clercq-Roques, and the radiant star vault in raw concrete contribute to its unique character.

The building was listed as historic monuments on 3 June 2005 for its architectural and heritage interest. In 2012, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary, artist Casimir Ferrer modified his cross path into 14 paintings, incorporating elements of Concretism, a technique combining painting and sculpture. The structure, in reinforced concrete with a brick wall, illustrates the architectural innovations of the 20th century while sancing in the Albige landscape.

Located at 4 rue Notre-Dame du Breuil, the church belongs to a diocesan association. Its listing of historic monuments covers the entire building and the plot on which it is built (Cadastre BC 267). The stylistic influences of the Cathedral of Albi, combined with modern materials such as concrete, make it a remarkable example of post-war religious architecture in Occitania.
