Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame and Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Condat-sur-Vézère, located in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, dates from the thirteenth century. It is an integral part of local history as an old dependency of the command office of St John of Jerusalem, founded in the 12th century in the commune. This monument is distinguished by its flat bell tower, accessible by a staircase integrated in a lateral foothill, whose collapsed façade has been replaced by a wrought iron gate.

The building, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 29 November 1948, illustrates medieval religious architecture linked to military and hospital orders. Its location in Condat-sur-Vézère, a village marked by a rural and religious history, reflects the importance of commanding offices in the territorial and spiritual organization of the region. The bell tower, with its four arcades, and the original access through an external staircase, testify to the architectural adaptations of the churches of that time.

Today owned by the municipality, the church retains a strong heritage value, although its present state (including the facade of the bell tower) reveals changes linked to the hazards of time. His inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments underscores his role in the local heritage, between medieval heritage and memory of religious orders such as that of Saint John of Jerusalem.
