Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame-et-Sainte-Anne de Bouville, located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, finds its origins in the 12th or 13th century. The building, of sober style, is characterized by a unique nave and flat bedside, built of stone and flint. This religious monument, typical of small rural communes, reflects the local architectural evolution throughout the centuries, with major reconstructions in the 16th century for the nave and choir.
In the seventeenth century, the church was enriched with remarkable liturgical furniture, including an altar, a altarpiece and an 18th-century tabernacle. It also houses three bells, one dating from the early 17th century, as well as ancient tombstones and a copy of a painting by Antoine Coypel. These elements demonstrate his central role in Bouville's community and spiritual life. The building has been listed as a historic monument since March 28, 1939, recognizing its heritage value.
Originally, the church had funerary liters on its walls, a common practice in rural churches to mark the burials of noble or wealthy families. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a preserved heritage, managed by the municipality. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1939 protected its architecture and furniture, offering a tangible testimony to the religious and social history of Normandy.
The location of Bouville in the Rouen district places this church in a regional context marked by a high density of historical monuments. The Seine-Maritime, rich in Christian heritage, has many comparable churches, often built or redesigned between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The Bouville church is thus part of a wider network of Norman places of worship, illustrating the artistic and religious developments in the region.
