Origin and history
The church of the Nativity-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste, located at the Billanges in Haute-Vienne (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. It was fortified in the 15th century, reflecting the defensive needs of the time, before undergoing major restorations in 1745 and 1869. This work preserved its structure while integrating architectural elements characteristic of later periods, especially the sixteenth century.
Surveys conducted in 2003 revealed traces of murals in the nave, probably dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. Among the scenes identified are an Annunciation and the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, testifying to the artistic and religious importance of the place. These discoveries highlight the church's cultural role in the local community throughout the centuries.
The building was listed as historic monuments on July 8, 2005, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Billanges, the church embodies the architectural and religious evolution of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location (Insee code 87016) make it a key element of the Haute-Vienne heritage.
