Origin and history
The parish church of Saint-Priest, located in Villerest in the Loire, has its origins in the second half of the 12th century. His original plan, typical of Romanesque architecture, was profoundly transformed by subsequent additions. In the 19th century, collaterals were added to the nave, as well as a sacristy and a masonry element on the northern absidiole, changing its medieval structure.
Under a fresco of Christ in majesty painted at the beginning of the twentieth century, major discoveries were made: a painting attributed to Zaccheo and an 18th century work representing the Resurrection. These elements testify to the artistic richness and successive transformations of the building. The church, which has been fully protected since 2014, illustrates an architectural and decorative history spanning centuries.
Classified as a Historical Monument, this church belongs to the municipality of Villerest. Its listing in 2014 covers the entire building, highlighting its heritage importance. The location, although noted as fair (5/10), allows to identify the building at the approximate address of 12 Rue des Marronniers, in an urban context marked by its religious and community history.
