Origin and history
The church of Saint-Adrien de L'Isle-en-Dodon, located in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region, is a Catholic building built in the 14th century. It was erected in 1307 on the initiative of Count Bernard VII of Comminges, initially as a castral chapel for his castle. The choir and bell tower, the only remains of this early period, have marked military features, such as crenellated arches and foothills, suggesting a defensive function.
The bell tower, of octagonal plan and pierced by ogival bays, is a remarkable architectural element, unique in its kind in the Comminges region. Ranked a historic monument in 1907 with the choir, it dominates the building, whose nave was rebuilt between 1836 and 1838 according to plans of architect Villeneuve. Inside, four stained glass windows dated 1509, attributed to a student of Arnaud de Moles, adorn the sanctuary, adding an artistic dimension to this religious and military heritage.
The church illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of medieval religious buildings, combining spiritual use and defense. Its history also reflects local transformations, with a nave rebuilt in the 19th century to meet the needs of a growing community. Today, it remains a testimony of the Comtal heritage and Southern Gothic art, while being an active place of worship in the municipality of L'Isle-en-Dodon.
