Origin and history

The church of Saint-Aignan d-Herbilly, classified as a Historical Monument, stands in the Loir-et-Cher in Sea. Its origins date back to the 12th century, with a choir, an apse in hemicycle and part of the nave in Romanesque style. Later extensions, at the end of the 15th or early 16th century, completed the nave, while a square bell tower, typical of the 16th century, and a flamboyant door of the early 17th century enriched its architecture. This monument thus illustrates the evolution of religious styles over five centuries.

In 1944, the church, disused since 1835, suffered heavy damage during the bombings of the Second World War. Today only the walls of the nave and the bell tower remain, silent witnesses of its past. The Romanesque part, preserved, contrasts with Renaissance and classical additions, offering a unique architectural panorama. The building is listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 21 September 1946, although its property is shared between the municipality and private hands.

The location of the church at 4 Rue du Foyer Latasta in Mer is documented with a precision considered "very satisfactory" (note 8/10). Its present state, marked by the destructions of 1944, makes it a site both historical and memorial. The sources available (Monumentum, Mérimée base) underline its heritage importance in the region Centre-Val de Loire, despite the shortcomings on certain aspects of its contemporary use (visits, services).
