Alpin de Châlons - Holy patron Dedication of the church of Saint-Alpin.

Origin and history

The Saint-Alpin church of Écury-sur-Coole, built around 1170, is one of the oldest Gothic churches in the centre of the Marne. It is distinguished by its flamed bell tower, a rare architectural peculiarity where the structure refines and rotates slightly by an eighth tower. Dedicated to Alpine de Châlons, it embodies a preserved medieval heritage, with remarkable interior elements such as a 14th century Christ on the Cross.

The Christ on the Cross, measuring about 1.30 metres, is an object listed as a historical monument since 2002. It bears witness to the artistic and religious richness of the period. The church, through its architecture and furniture, offers an overview of the evolution of Gothic styles in the region, while emphasizing the central role of religious buildings in medieval community life.

The absence of detailed sources on sponsors or specific events related to its construction limits the knowledge of its social history. However, its flamed bell tower and dedication to Alpine de Châlons make it an emblematic monument, reflecting both the architectural innovations of the 12th century and the local devotion.
