Origin and history

The church Saint-Alpin de Châlons-en-Champagne is a Gothic building built between the 12th and 16th centuries on the site of an old chapel dedicated to Saint Andrew. It is dedicated to Saint Alpin, the 8th bishop of Châlons, and is distinguished by its hybrid architecture: the nave and the collaterals of the 12th century alongside a Renaissance transept of the 15th century and the lower side enlarged in the 16th century. Two 12th century medallion stained glass windows from another church and a dedication to the tomb of Saint Alpin are preserved.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1862 (confirmed in 1914), the church occupies a central location between Notre Dame Basilica, the Cathedral, and Foch Squares and the Republic. Its western Romanesque façade, completed with a three-bay gable, contrasts with the Renaissance side gates (including a date of 1539). Inside, the 13th-century dogive vaults are based on alternating pillars, while the bedside, rebuilt in the 15th century, includes a hexagonal apse and a walk-through without radiant chapels.

The building houses a rich artistic heritage: sculptures (figures of saints framing the portal, gargoyles), paintings (including a painting by Nicolas Perseval representing Saint Andrew), and 16th century stained glass windows. Organs, whose 18th-century buffet (classified 1973) comes from the Abbey of Sainte-Hoïlde, were modified in the 19th century. The remarkable objects also include funerary slabs (Jehan Callisson, Marguerite Le Sayne) and liturgical furniture like a bishop's throne.

Threatened by destruction in 1791, the church benefited from restoration campaigns in the 19th and 20th centuries, preserving its tile, slate and lead covers, as well as its bow-buttons supporting the nave. Its square bell tower, covered with a roof in the pavilion, dominates the cross of the transept. The materials used, such as the cutting stone of the Faloise and Savonnières quarries, bear witness to local techniques.

The history of the church has been documented since the 19th century by archaeologists such as Abbé Hurault or Louis Demaison, who studied its tombstones and architecture. Today owned by the commune, it remains a major witness to the evolution of religious styles in Champagne, from the roman to the flamboyant Gothic.
