Origin and history
The church Saint-Amateur-et-Saint-Viateur de Saint-Amour finds its origins in an ancient foundation, transformed into a collegiate church in 1632. The choir, dating from the late 15th century, is one of the oldest elements of the building. The bell tower, meanwhile, was rebuilt between 1611 and 1616 by master mason Oddot, after damage suffered during the siege of 1637, which partially ran the church. These events marked the beginning of a long period of reconstruction and restoration.
The reconstruction of the church was built on much of the 17th century, with works that continued until 1709, including the nave, built in the early 18th century. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin was added in 1738, thus completing the building. In the 19th century, restorations were undertaken to finalize interior decoration and furniture, consolidating the present-day appearance of the church. These successive interventions reflect the importance of this place of worship to the local community.
The church is now partially protected under the Historical Monuments. The bell tower, classified by order of 30 April 1996, and the rest of the building, registered since 9 November 1994, bear witness to its architectural and historical heritage. The precise location of the church at 14 Rue du Commerce in Saint-Amour, as well as its membership in the commune, make it a central element of the Jurasian heritage in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
