Origin and history

Église Saint-André d'Argent-sur-Sauldre is a Catholic church located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is located on the northeast edge of the village, close to the castle of Saint-Maur. Its history begins in the 13th century, when it could have served as a castral chapel, although this hypothesis remains uncertain. The building still retains today its nave of origin, characteristic of this medieval era.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the church underwent major expansions commissioned by Marie de Sully and Charles d'Albret. These works add a bell tower, a choir, an apse and chapels, profoundly transforming its structure. The weapons of the sponsors, which are now at stake, testify to their involvement in this project. The building was restored in 1892 by architect Octave Guérin, before being classified as a historical monument by decree of 22 December 1944.

The church thus embodies almost eight centuries of religious and architectural history, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance modifications. Its classification in 1944 underlines its heritage value, while its location near the Château de Saint-Maur evokes historical ties with the local nobility. The 19th century restorations, led by Octave Guérin, preserved this emblematic building of the Cher.
