Origin and history

The church Saint-André de Château-Ville-Ville-Ville is a historical monument located in the Hautes-Alpes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It was built at its current location after several displacements related to the needs of the population and the attacks suffered by the village. Its history reflects the urban and military developments of the region, particularly under the influence of Vauban.

The first parish church of the village, built west of the fort, was considered too far from the houses and rebuilt in 1635 at the place called the Collet. After the attack of 1692, it was moved with the whole village on order of Vauban, then demolished in 1696. Rebuilt at its current location, it already appears on Vauban's plans in 1700, although its exact date of construction (1722, according to a recent inscription) remains uncertain. The sundial bears the date of 1841, and important restorations took place in 1938, including the painted decoration of the nave.

The church is partially protected: its bell tower and portal have been listed as historical monuments since 29 November 1948. Owned by the municipality, it reflects architectural and urban adaptations related to conflicts and community needs, from the 17th to the 20th century.
