Origin and history
The church Saint-André de Saint-André-de-Double, located in the Dordogne department in New Aquitaine, is a building whose origin probably dates back to the Romanesque period. Although its foundations may date from this period, it underwent significant transformations in the 14th century, marked by significant architectural changes. Its present appearance thus reflects a superposition of styles, dominated by late medieval changes.
The structure of the church is characterized by a unique nave, enlarged eastward at mid-term, and ending with a flat bedside. The whole is covered with a panel, while the most remarkable element remains its western bell tower. The latter is supported by a huge broken landfill arch, a typical Gothic architectural technique, with a third-point portal. The walls, built of ferrous sandstone, bear witness to the local materials used during the various construction phases.
Classified as a Historical Monument since 1983, the church is now owned by the municipality of Saint-André-de-Double. Its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments specifically concerns the religious building (cadestre AD 5), highlighting its heritage importance. Although the sources do not specify its current use, its location in Bourg and its state of conservation, considered satisfactory, make it a central element of the local heritage.
The historical context of the region, marked by rural occupation and communities organized around parishes, explains the social and spiritual role of this type of building. Churches like Saint Andrew served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the religious and community dynamics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in Périgord.
