Origin and history

The church of Saint-Anthime-et-Saint-Saturnin in Brommat, located in Aveyron, Occitanie, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century, although its major reconstruction took place in the first half of the 15th century. It replaces an old Romanesque church, demolished in 1478 by permission of the bishop of Rodez Bertrand de Chalençon, due to its state of advanced degradation. The new church, accompanied by two chapels, is built in a late Gothic style, as is the adjacent priory, called the castle, which served as a residence for the prior appointed by the Abbé de Conques.

In the 16th century, the priory was invaded by Protestants in 1582, probably causing damage to the church, as evidenced by restoration work carried out in 1601. This work, led by Abbé de Conques Jean Mignot and Prior Jean Johani, includes the consolidation of the vaults of the choir and chapels, as well as the repair of the bell tower. Local artisans, such as the mason Jean Solenc and the carpenter Bernard Trin, are actively involved. At that time, the church also houses a brotherhood dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, founded in 1515.

The modifications continued in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the closure of the bedside fillings to install a table representing the martyrdom of Saint Saturnin, patron saint of the church. In the 19th century, major transformations were undertaken: the construction of a sacristy in 1822 by the parish priest Antoine Bors, then the meeting of the lateral chapels around 1850 under the impulse of the parish priest Pierre Mousses, who also ordered a altarpiece and a pulpit to be preached. His successor, Fr. Frédéric Cambournanc, completed the gilding and woodwork of the choir. In 1920, the cemetery surrounding the church was moved, and an extension was added to the sacristy. The building was finally listed as a historic monument in 1927, before benefiting from a restoration project from 1997.

The church is distinguished by its sheltered comb bell tower, accessible by a staircase starting from the porch, and by its ivy vaults and thirdons decorated with carved keys. The blazes of the choir represent figures and angels, while the southern chapel exposes the blessed Christ and the four Evangelists. These architectural and decorative elements illustrate the historical and religious significance of this monument, linked to the abbey of Conques and the barrez viguria from the Middle Ages.

Brommat, the capital of the Barrez viguria in the ninth century, was a major judicial and religious centre under the authority of the Counts of Rodez. In 1074, Count Aimoin and his wife Pétronille yielded the church and its outbuildings to Abbé Stephen II de Conques, making Brommat the priory-chief of Barrez. This status reinforces the role of the church as a place of spiritual and temporal power, reflecting the feudal and ecclesiastical dynamics of the region.
