Origin and history
Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue de Saul is a wooden Catholic church, unique in the department of Guyana with its two bell towers. It was built between 1952 and 1962 under the direction of the architect Claude Martin, with the involvement of Fathers Bazin and Didier, as well as Monsignor Marie, bishop of the time. The residents of Saul actively participated in its construction by carrying stones and sand from the quarry to the construction site.
The building is a testimony of the time when Saul was the main gold centre of Guyana. Ranked a historic monument on February 11, 1993, it is the only classified construction of its architect. It was completely renovated in 1995 thanks to the intervention of twelve men from the carpentry-carpent section of the 3rd RSMA.
In 2023, the church was selected for the heritage lottery, allowing restoration work between 2023 and 2024. This monument, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of local history and religious architecture in wood.
