Origin and history
Saint-Antoine Church is a parish Catholic church located in Bois-Herpin, Essonne department, Île-de-France. It stands in the village of this rural commune, close to the border with Loiret, on the plain of Beauce. Its simple architecture includes a unique three-span nave, finished with a flat bedside, topped by a bell tower. This type of modest construction reflects the rural history of the region, where churches served as a focal point for local communities.
The interior houses a variety of furniture, including several elements protected from historical monuments. Among them are liturgical objects (calice, candlesticks, bells), statues (Saint Anthony, Christ on the Cross), as well as wooden stalls dating from the 16th century. These objects bear witness to religious life and liturgical practices throughout the centuries, especially between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
The church has undergone recent restorations, with major works in 2016 and a renovation of the stained glass windows in 2019. These interventions aimed to preserve this local heritage, while maintaining its active role in parish life. The presence of stained glass and protected movable objects underscores its historical and cultural importance for Bois-Herpin and its surroundings.
