Origin and history
The church Saint-Aubin de Latresne, located in the Gironde department, is attested as early as 1274 in the will of Pierre de Latresne. Originally Romanesque, it consisted of a nave, a semicircular apse and a bell tower. In the 14th century, the bell tower was transformed into a rectangular tower with murderers, while subsequent changes, such as the addition of lower sides in the 18th century and the pentagonal enlargement of the apse in the 19th century, profoundly altered its original appearance.
In the 16th century, the church was almost entirely rebuilt, but only the base of the bell tower remains of this period, its upper part having been redone in 1628, as indicated by an extended date. In 1867, architect Grellet undertook a major reconstruction, retaining only elements of the 16th and 17th centuries. Despite the construction of the chapel of Saint-Joseph-du-Rocher in the 19th century, initiated by Count Henri de Bonneval to replace Saint-Aubin deemed excavated and dilapidated, the historic church remained the parish building preferred by the inhabitants.
The bell tower of Saint-Aubin Church has been listed as historical monuments since December 24, 1925. It is one of the few protected elements of this monument, which continues to play a central role in Latresne's religious and heritage life. Its location, east of the old town and overlooking the Pimpine valley, makes it a major visual and historical landmark for the town.
