Aubin d'Angers - Holy Christian Hagiotoponyme originator of the name.

Origin and history

The church Saint-Aubin de Saint-Aubin is located in the village of the same name, in the department of Aisne, in the region Hauts-de-France. This village, formerly named Sanctus-Albinus in 1145, then Saint-Albin in 1639, derives its name from the Hagiotoponyme Aubin d'Angers. During the Revolution, the commune was renamed Francœur-la-Carrière in 1793. It was historically part of the seigneury of Coucy and depended on the bailiage, stewardship and diocese of Soissons.

Saint-Aubin is located in the Ailette valley, 35 km west of Laon, in a territory marked by a majority agricultural occupation (76.4% in 2018). The commune, which is rural and has a dispersed habitat, is now attached to the canton of Vic-sur-Aisne and the district of Laon. It is part of the community of communes Picardie des Châteaux, created in 2017.

The village, with its 276 inhabitants in 2023, retains traces of its medieval and religious past, although little precise architectural or historical details about the church itself are mentioned in the available sources. Its history is closely linked to that of the seigneury of Coucy, a major local power in the Middle Ages, and the ecclesiastical organization of Soissons.

The local climate, of a degraded oceanic type, and the hydrographic network (bottom, mill ru, mare Cocheferre) shaped the living environment of the inhabitants. Ancient maps, such as that of Cassini (18th century), allow us to trace the evolution of the territory, but archives specific to the church of Saint Aubin remain rare in the source text.

No information is available on the period of construction of the church, its architectural features, or the significant events that took place there. The historical records are limited to the territorial and administrative context of the municipality, without details of the monument itself.
