Origin and history

The church Saint-Aubin de Seiches-sur-le-Loir is a religious building located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Originally built in the 11th century around 1060 under the impulse of Foulque Nerra, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture of this period. Its choir, rebuilt in the 13th century, bears witness to the influence of the Angelian Gothic school, marking a significant stylistic evolution in the region.

The nave of the church, demolished in the nineteenth century, was rebuilt in 1860, incorporating more modern elements while preserving historical parts such as the bell tower, the transept and the seigneurial chapel. These elements, along with sacristy, were listed as historic monuments in 1987, recognizing their heritage value. The building, owned by the municipality, remains a symbol of local religious and architectural heritage.

The Saint-Aubin church is part of a historical context marked by the central role of parish churches in the social and spiritual organization of the Angelian villages. In the Middle Ages, these buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the community, reflecting the power of the local lords and the Church. The partial reconstruction in the 13th century coincides with a period of economic prosperity and architectural innovations in Anjou, where Gothic style gradually spreads.
