Origin and history

The church Saint-Barthélemy de Bouzic, located in the Dordogne department in Black Perigord, is a religious building of Romanesque origin built in the 12th century. It is initially characterized by a unique nave accompanied by a transept, while its choir adopts a cul-de-four vault decorated with five blind arches. A carved capital, representing two angels probably framing the Paschal Lamb, supports the triumphal arch on the south side, adding a remarkable artistic dimension to the architectural ensemble.

In the 15th century, the church underwent notable changes with the addition of a porch, a late architectural element contrasting with the original Romanesque structure. The bell tower, triangular and flat, is a rare architectural feature. The building has been partially protected since 1948, with an inscription as historical monuments specifically covering the porch and carved capital. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of these iconic elements.

The location of Bouzic, in the Dordogne Valley, places this church in a historical context marked by medieval Christian architecture. The Black Perigord, rich in Romanesque monuments, illustrates the religious and cultural importance of the region during the Middle Ages. The church of Saint-Barthélemy, a communal property, thus bears witness to the architectural and spiritual evolution of this area over centuries.
