Origin and history
The church Saint-Barthélemy de Montireau, located in the Eure-et-Loir department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, was built in the first half of the sixteenth century. It was enhanced in 1752 and listed as a historic monument in 1980. Its architecture combines a nave preceded by a narthex and two chapels forming a false transept. The entrance door, dated from the 16th century, features a low arch framed by smooth pilasters, topped by a triangular pediment.
The building houses murals in the abside and side chapels, made in the 16th and 17th centuries, while those of the choir date from the 19th century. The flamboyant Gothic windows preserve original stained glass windows. The church is an architectural and artistic testimony of the Renaissance in Perche, an area marked by a rich natural and historical heritage.
Montireau, a rural municipality with 136 inhabitants in 2023, is integrated into the Perche Regional Natural Park. His history is linked to local lords, such as Jean de Montireau, mentioned in 1515. The church, damaged by lightning in 2019 (cluster touched), is the object of preservation efforts, illustrated by a concert organized in 2025 to finance its restoration.
The village, surrounded by forests and farmland, is exposed to an altered ocean climate. Its heritage also includes a medieval commandery and the remains of a 16th century castle. The church Saint-Barthélemy remains the most emblematic monument, reflecting the religious and social history of this small percheronne commune.
