Origin and history

The church Saint-Barthélemy de Poncey-sur-l'Ignon, located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built between 1785 and 1787 according to an unusual plan for the region. The building combines a nave covered with a rib dome, a rectangular choir, and two side chapels, all preceded by a bell tower added in 1872. Older elements, such as the avant-chœur and its dogive vaults, could date back to the 13th century, while the portal and some walls probably date back to the late 15th or early 16th century. The windows and vault of the nave were redone in the seventeenth century.

The current bell tower, designed by architect E. Lhommelin in 1872, replaces an old bell tower considered too low and not visible. The work, carried out by entrepreneur N. Ratel, was also aimed at improving access to the choir, then masked by pillars. In 1846, the architect Fénéon-Damotte had already proposed repairs, including the development of a confessional. The sacristy was enlarged in 1896 by entrepreneurs D.E. Fraivret and R. Deschamps, illustrating the successive adaptations of the building to liturgical and structural needs.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 13 June 2001, the church is distinguished by its mix of styles: limestone bells, stone cut for the bell tower, and various roofs (mechanical tiles, slates, flat stone). Its complex plan, combining central nave, lateral chapels and extended choir, reflects an architectural evolution marked by re-employment and additions. Interior decorations, such as the niche in a braid painted behind the altarpiece or ground caps, testify to Gothic and classical influences.

The building, owned by the municipality, is located in the heart of the village, in the enclosure of the cemetery. Its history reveals a community anxious to preserve and adapt its place of worship, as evidenced by the many interventions of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
