Origin and history
The Saint-Barthélémy church of Pradau, located in Condom in Gers, is a monument whose construction spans several centuries, from the 12th and 14th centuries for its oldest parts, until the renovations of the 17th and 19th centuries. Its architecture thus blends Romanesque elements, such as a three-piece portal decorated with carved capitals and a fire integrated into the north wall, with more recent additions, such as the bell tower erected after 1834. The latter dominates a quadrangular porch accessible by a staircase, while the nave ends with a flat bedside, characteristic of the buildings in this area.
In 1569, the church suffered degradation during religious conflicts, attributed to Protestant troops in Montgoméry, an episode marking its turbulent history. Inside, the Notre-Dame chapel is distinguished by its 17th century coffered ceiling, richly decorated with medallions depicting the apostles and evangelists, surrounded by floral motifs, fruits and elegiac landscapes. These artistic elements testify to the cultural and spiritual importance of the place, reflecting both its medieval heritage and its baroque beautifications.
By order of 29 December 1987, the church now belongs to the municipality of Condom. Its conservation status and location, assessed as "fair" (note 5/10), highlight the challenges of its preservation. The site, open to the public, embodies a religious, architectural and artistic heritage, rooted in the tumultuous history of Occitanie and Gers.
