Origin and history

The church Saint-Benoît, dedicated to Saint Benoît de Nursie, is located in Saint-Benoît-sur-Mer, in the Vendée department. It has been listed in the Historic Monuments since 1956. Its archaeological remains bear witness to a rich history, with a nave and a bell tower dating partly from the 11th century. The building, initially a chapel linked to a priory, was fortified during the Hundred Years War to protect the villagers.

In the 17th century, the church served as a place of arms for the Huguenots before being taken over by the Royalists in 1621. Its architecture combines Romanesque (coupole on trunks) and Gothic (choir of the twelfth century). The 18th century altarpiece and the foothills added during the fortifications complete its historical character. Three legends explain the presence of a rabbit smoking the pipe on its roof, an unusual symbol linked to local anecdotes.

The nave, the oldest part, is surmounted by a Romanesque dome, while the chorus, in a dogive cross, reflects the Gothic Angelian influence. The church, now visitable, preserves traces of its military and religious past, with turrets surrounding the porch and massive foothills. Its history combines conflicts, reconstructions and popular traditions, embodied by the carved rabbit.
