Origin and history
The church of Saint-Blaise de Benque-Dessus, located in the commune of Benque-Dessous-et-Dessus in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), is a 14th century religious building. It is distinguished by its simple basilical plane, with a single vaulted nave in a broken cradle, a semicircular apse and a bell tower with two arches. The church is surrounded by a cemetery and has square appendices: a chapel to the north and a sacristy to the south. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of the Pyrenean churches of the time.
The building underwent modifications in the 16th century, including the addition of a north side chapel, covered with a cross of warheads and decorated with murals. These frescoes, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, depict religious scenes (life of Mary, Passion of Christ) as well as a rare seigneurial scene with a horseman and ladies. The chapel of Saint-Éloi, added in the 17th century, houses marble baptismal fonts and a carved wooden fence. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 10 February 1960 for its architecture and exceptional interior decoration.
The murals, covering the nave, choir and northern chapel, illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of the region. The first written mention of the church dates back to 1289, and restorations took place in the 15th and 17th centuries. The bell tower, the stencil-painted rostrum and the carved clots testify to the rich heritage of this place of worship, still owned by the commune.
The church of Saint-Blaise embodies local history, combining religious, funeral (presence of an adjoining cemetery) and social functions. Its interior decor, including geometric figures and narrative scenes, makes it a remarkable example of medieval sacred art and reborn in Occitanie. The protection of historical monuments underlines its importance in the French architectural and artistic heritage.
