Origin and history

The church Saint-Blaise de Bogy, located in the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a neo-Roman-style building erected in the centre of the village. Initially a simple chapel dependent on the priory of Saint-Martin de Peyraud, it was mentioned in 1154 as "Sanctus Blascus". Its status evolved over the centuries: erected as a parish in 1593 under the archdiocese of Vienna, it underwent the upheavals of the Revolution, with a possible closure in 1793 before its reopening in 1802. His administrative history was marked by changes in parish status, notably in 1807, 1840, and contemporary mergers such as that of 2021 with the creation of the parish "Blessed Gabriel Longueville".

The reconstruction of the church in 1866-1870, at a cost of 17 448.50 francs, gave rise to the present building, characterized by a vaulted nave in a Latin cross and a bell tower overlooking the gate. The old church, still visible in 2020 near the "street of the Two Churches", bears witness to this architectural transition. The beautification campaigns continued in the 19th and 20th centuries, with work on facades (1990s) and interior paintings (2020). The church houses remarkable liturgical elements, such as a 19th-century harmonium signed "The Little Sons of Mr. Kasriel", stained glass windows with figurative medallions, and a carved tympanum representing a "Christ in majesty".

The name of the church is dedicated to Saint Blaise de Sébaste, patron of the place, whose attributes appear in the stained glass windows. His liturgical furniture includes an altar "in front of the people", a tabernacle adorned with an Assumption, and statues of saints (Thérèse of Lisieux, Joseph, Anne). The monument to the dead of 1914-1918, integrated into the building, recalls local history, while successive parish reorganizations (1994, 2003, 2021) reflect the Catholic Church's adaptations to territorial and societal developments. The 1906 inventory, marked by the resistance of parishioners, illustrates the tensions linked to the Law of Separation of Churches and the State.

The contemporary pastoral organization is structured around a "pastoral animation team" (E.A.P.), chaired by a parish priest, since the merger of the parishes of the basin of Annonay in 2021. The local and diocesan archives, as well as works such as "Ardèche... from one church to another" (Alice Lacour, 2013), document this rich history, where the Church of Bogy embodies both a medieval heritage, modern transformations, and an ever-active community life.
