Clergé de Mende - Prior-nominator (1433) Managed the church in the 15th century.

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Blaise de Chasseradès, located in the department of Lozère in the commune of Mont Lozère and Goulet, is a Catholic religious building dating back to the twelfth century. Built in granite stone for bearing elements and in rubble for fillings, it is characterized by an initial nave of three spans and a circular apse inside, pentagonal outside. The triumphal arch, supported by twin columns with carved capitals (motifs of interlaces, foliage and figurines), bears witness to its mountain Romanesque style. The site was mentioned as early as 1227, and in 1433 the church depended on the clergy of Mende, who was its nominator prior.

In the 16th century, the building underwent major modifications: the nave was two-spaned to the west, a lower side was added to the north, and the apse was reinforced by two foothills to the southeast. The current square bell tower, pierced with two bays in the middle of the hanger, probably replaces a primitive arcade bell tower originally located on the west gable. These transformations reflect the architectural adaptations of the period, mixing Romanesque heritage and late Gothic additions.

Classified as a historical monument by order of May 25, 1943, the church now belongs to the commune of Chasseradès. Its oriented plan, local materials (granite and honeycombs) and carved elements make it a representative example of the Lozerian mountain churches. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) underline its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its historical anchoring in the Gevaudan.

The location of the building, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the Monumentum base, corresponds to the administrative address of Chasseradès (code Insee 48027), although GPS coordinates sometimes place it in the neighbouring municipality of Mont Lozère and Goulet. This geographical ambiguity reflects the complex territorial divisions of the region, marked by scattered hamlets and mountain relief.

The elements protected by the 1943 classification cover the entire church, including its enlarged nave, its modified apse, and its 16th century bell tower. The communal property now ensures its preservation, although information on its accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation) remains undocumented in the sources consulted.

Finally, the church of Saint-Blaise is part of a broader heritage network, as evidenced by its mention in the List of Historic Monuments of the Lozère. Its observatory of religious heritage (resource "Clochers de France") and its Mérimée sheet (architecture base) make it a subject of study for art historians and archaeologists specialized in the rural buildings of the medieval Midi.
