Origin and history
The Saint-Blaise parish church of Poggio-Marinaccio was built on Romanesque bases dating from the Middle Ages. This historic monument underwent major transformations between the second half of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. During this work, its orientation was reversed: the eastern apse was partially destroyed to build a gate, while the western gate was closed. A side chapel was opened in the north wall, and the altars and interior fittings were redone in a baroque style.
The building features an elongated plan with a flat bedside, composed of a unique nave covered with an apparent wooden frame and a vaulted side chapel in a glass crib. The choir, also covered with a wooden frame, and the west wall carry a free bay campanile. These architectural features reflect the different periods of construction and renovation, especially in the 19th century.
Saint-Blaise Church has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2019, including the nearby Sainte-Croix (Santa-Croce) Confrery Chapel. These protections cover the entire buildings as well as their floor as specified in the classification order. The property belongs to the commune of Poggio-Marinaccio, located in Haute-Corse.
