Origin and history

The church of Saint-Bonnet, located in Giu-de-Mamou in Cantal (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a religious building whose reconstruction dates back to the end of the 14th century. It succeeds a former Romanesque building, whose remains served as a foundation. Its architecture combines a two-span nave, a square apse on the outside and with strips cut inside, as well as side chapels. One of them is home to the fire of the Giou family, testifying to its local importance.

The bell tower, characteristic of the building, was added in the seventeenth century, marking an architectural evolution after the initial construction. The interior of the church is distinguished by its arches on cross-walls, typical of Gothic art. It was listed as a historical monument on 14 November 1980, recognizing its heritage value.

The church Saint-Bonnet illustrates the medieval heritage of the region, mixing Romanesque and Gothic influences. Its official protection underscores its role in the religious and architectural history of the Cantal, while preserving elements such as the family fire, a tangible trace of the local seigneurial past.
